The Eye See Eye Learn Program, presented by the Alberta Association of Optometrists, provides free comprehensive eye exams and free eyeglasses, to kindergarten students across the province.

This vital program aims to ensure children can see clearly and focus properly before beginning their critical early school years.

The Eye See Eye Learn Program™

The Eye See Eye Learn Program has been helping Alberta families with vision problem since 2008.

It provides free eye exams and glasses to kindergarten-aged children who need them. This helps identify, treat, and prevent vision issues that could hamper kids' learning and development.

Early detection and correction of vision problems sets children with vision problem up for academic and life success.

Kindergarten Students in Alberta can Receive Free Glasses

Through the Eye See Eye Learn Program, every Alberta kindergartener is eligible for a free pair of prescription eyeglasses if deemed necessary by a participating optometrist.

  • This program also supplements existing Alberta Health coverage of eye exams for children under 19.
  • Eyeglasses, lenses, cases, and repairs for one year are provided at no cost to kindergarten students and families thanks to corporate donations.

Understanding The Eye See Eye Learn Alberta Program

Presented by the Alberta Association of Optometrists

The Eye See Eye Learn Program was created by the Alberta Association of Optometrists (AAO) in 2008.

The AAO represents over 85% of optometrists across Alberta. Their goal with this program is to increase public awareness of children's vision health, provide access to eye care for all families, and boost learning readiness as kids begin school.

An Overview of your Child's Comprehensive Eye Exam

The eye exams provided by the Eye See Eye Learn Program check all aspects of ocular health and visual functioning. Tests determine the health of eyes' structures, assess focusing and coordination abilities between the two eyes, test colour vision, check 3D depth perception and peripheral vision, and diagnose common childhood vision disorders.

After a thorough assessment of vision changes, custom treatment plans and prescriptions eyeglasses can be provided to correct any issues detected after eye injuries.

Catching and correcting problems early prevents worsening symptoms and permanent vision loss. This sets up kids for a lifetime of healthy sight.

How does the program work?

The Eye See Eye Learn Program provides free eye exams and glasses to all Alberta kindergarten students who need them. Exams are covered by Alberta Health, while glasses are donated by program partners.simply book an appointment with a participating optometrist to access the child's eye exam program.

Who is eligible?

All Alberta kindergarteners are eligible, from the start of their kindergarten year until they begin Grade 1.

What is included?

A comprehensive eye exam covered by Alberta Health, and if prescribed complete a comprehensive eye exam, a free pair of eyeglasses courtesy of program partners. This includes frames, lenses, cases, and a 1-year manufacturer's warranty.

Why is catching vision issues early so important?

80% of learning in a child's first 12 years is visual. Uncorrected vision problems can interfere with the child's ability during critical early stages of education overall development. Detecting issues in kindergarten and providing glasses helps support learning and development.
